As the weather cools down in Council Bluffs and the days get shorter, your vehicle’s needs change. Preparing now for fall and winter driving conditions can save you from unexpected breakdowns, costly repairs, and safety hazards when the roads turn slick.
At Dave’s Complete Auto Service, we’ve put together a seasonal checklist to help you get your car ready for colder months ahead:
✅ 1. Check Your Tires
Make sure your tires have enough tread depth for wet, icy, or snowy roads.
Inspect for dry rot, uneven wear, or bulges.
Don’t forget a proper alignment—misaligned wheels can wear tires down faster.
✅ 2. Test Your Battery
Cold weather is tough on batteries. If yours is more than 3–4 years old, have it tested.
Clean corrosion from terminals and ensure connections are tight.
✅ 3. Inspect Brakes and Brake Fluid
Stopping distances increase in bad weather—healthy brakes are critical.
If it’s been more than 2 years, consider a brake fluid flush to maintain proper performance.
✅ 4. Check Your Heating & Defrosting Systems
A working heater and defroster aren’t just for comfort—they’re essential for visibility and safety.
✅ 5. Inspect Wipers and Washer Fluid
Replace streaky or cracked wipers.
Fill up with winter-grade washer fluid that won’t freeze.
✅ 6. Top Off and Inspect Fluids
Coolant/antifreeze levels are especially important in cold weather.
Don’t forget oil, transmission, power steering, and windshield washer fluids.
✅ 7. Examine Lights
With shorter days, you’ll use headlights more often.
Check all bulbs and lenses for proper operation and clarity.
✅ 8. Pack a Winter Emergency Kit
Include jumper cables, gloves, blanket, flashlight, scraper, and a small shovel.
